1.

What do you think of FORM?

We strive to make form generated from an idea to create an experience of space that makes sense. Form should never represent a constructed image, a symbol or an irrational idea. Only through the physical qualities of a building can we understand its architecture. For that reason form is the architectural language that expresses the intention of the author. In our contemporary world an architect needs a distinct language to create an own universe and consequently develop a relevant position in architecture.

2.

What do you think of MATERIALS?

Materials offer an opportunity for further coherence when creating architecture because like form, it can give a precise formulation of the building’s idea and the intention of the architect. The basis of the choice of the material must be the idea. So, it only makes sense that a single material gives the building the ability to translate the idea most precisely.

3.

What do you think of TEXTURE and COLOR?

Most of our buildings are made out of concrete. This material gives us the possibility to vary the texture and color. The concrete texture physically expresses the building, not only in the experience of the idea but in the way it has been constructed. The concrete color defines a specific character for the building. For us, the reddish-brown concrete makes reference to buildings that, figuratively speaking, grow out of the ground. These are buildings that were not born in the brain and are more wild and earthy in expression. On the other hand, the use of white concrete is based on a more disciplined intellect and expresses an invention, an idea and enlightenment.

4.

What do you think of STRUCTURE and how do you use it in your design?

To work with an idea requires a precise imagination of the structural concept of the building. The structure needs to be integrated into the architectonic order of the building. It has to be fundamental, logical and economic for the building and its idea. Building structures always try to conform the system of different building elements and their structural tasks. We are very much fascinated if there is no conformity between building elements in an extreme way despite the fact that they all form part of one system. As a matter of fact, it is better if there is a low degree of conformity in the structure because it is exactly that contradiction that makes people think about buildings.

5.

What do you think of SPACE and how do you CREATE SPACE?

The best thing about buildings is that you can physically experience its spaces. Experience of space is what a person encounters and feels when entering a room or looking at a building from the outside. The architect is the active shaper of the experience of space. Such experience of space is a ‘raw’ material with which any building must deal. We do this by giving the space a precise physical formulation in terms of its shape and its walls, columns, floor, ceiling, material, light, texture, acoustics and all of the other qualities that engage a person’s sense. We understand the role of an architect as one who thinks and creates space. Spaces give buildings – by means of their presence – subjective universal validity.

Could you describe your design THINKING PROCEDURE after receiving a commission and how do you settle on an idea to start the design?

At the beginning of each commission it is above all about the formulation of the idea. Before we make even one line on paper, we are looking for an idea and then developing its formulation. To imagine, in the office we all sit around a table and talk about projects, about architectural possibilities, about the idea of architecture itself. When the building is then invented, we can describe it in words, we can describe the idea and its architectural intent. Only when we are at the stage that we can explain the aim, will one of us begin to depict exact computer drawings
of the whole building. The fact that we can articulate it intellectually from the outset makes the architecture even more conceptual because we give birth to it in the realm of an intellectually articulated language.

With our architecture, we aim to express something which is genuine, as general as possible and as close to the truth – in the sense of consistent and pure as possible. And the truth is neither beautiful nor ugly, neither chaotic nor neat, neither ecological nor non-ecological, but meaningful.
